A bit of magic to beat this summer

Kids, make a cool catch of the magic bunny!


Yoga and branches of science would have an important place in the Magic Academy’s popular Summer Vacation Magic Camp for children. Admission for this two-month-long annual training during April-May has begun at the Academy.

The course provides learning of magical art with fun and frolic. It is also a serious and scientific learning that would turn the participants into able magicians. Tips to enhance memory power, ways to acquire problem solving skills and techniques to earn an appealing personality are also taught. Intriguing aspects of Mathematics, science and what not – even computer magic and optical illusions - are also brought to the classrooms.

Magic sessions, beginning with a Yoga practicing will be held during 9.30am to 1pm whereas general knowledge and personality development sessions will be conducted in the afternoons till 5pm.

Yo... Yo... Yona Day!

On 13th Dec., 60th petal blooms for the monthly PPC at Magic Academy.


Thiruvananthapuram: Perfect Performer Course, the monthly refresher course for magicians offered by the Magic Academy, is completing five successful years on 13th of December.

To celebrate the occasion in a meaningful way, the Acade my has roped in the assistance of Tamil Nadu’s magic pride and versatile magician, Palladam Yona. For the 60th session of PPC, this Coimba tore-based magician will offer his lecture cum demonstration on conjuring techniques with a special stress on comedy aspects.
Well known for his atypical comedy magic in the guise of Charlie Chaplin, Mr. Yona’s name is counted also as a talented teacher in the magical art.

He is noted for the multidi mensional capabilities as a magician. For Vismayam 2000, he had a meticulous perfor mance of the traditional street magic. To the latest, in 2008, he held an audience of 1000 magicians from India and abroad under his at the Vismayam festival in Thiruvananthapuram.

Evening magic show
The newly formed Alumni organization of the Academy has decided to conduct a magic show by this teacher who frequented during the initial years of the Academy. The 45-minute performance will be held at the Krishna Pillai Foundation (KPF) Hall, Nandavanam. The funds generated will be utilized for the future activities of the alumni.

59th session of monthly refresher course for magicians at the Magic Academy

Thiruvananthapuram: Dr. U.P. Rajeev, a scientist, will be wearing the coat of a magic teacher at the Magic Academy, on 8th of November, on the occasion of the 59th Perfect Performer Course for magicians.

Dr. Rajeev, a past student and presently, an honorary faculty of the Academy, will be taking his counterparts to the celestial heights of magical knowledge. Unveiled in the class will be some of the hitherto not so much discussed mantra of making impromptu magic impressive.

“The class will deal with easy, impressive and routined impromptu magic” he says. Thus a class can be a launch pad to enhance the participants’ skill in magic. Or else it can propel you to higher levels of magical presentation.

Thiruvananthapuram: Vijayan Kadamkode, former teacher and all-time associate of the Magic Academy is packing his magic bag with a fresh stock of magic tricks. this master magician will open his bagful of tricks during the 58th Perfect Performer Course (PPC) slated for 11th Oct .

Guiding principle for the class will be that learning and teaching are precious and constant processes that should extend throughout a magician’s life.

There are umpteen of effects that we know, but easy methods to give required impact for the shows, are quite often unknown.

Hence Mr. Kadamkode’s endeavour will be to introduce a fresh metho dology of presentation for an engrossing stock of impromptu items. Common props like ropes, coins and cards will have sure place in his teachings.

But what would make his class extra ordinary, is a secret potion that every magician should know, for making their impromptu magic impressive.

Stage set ready for Onam Magic Fest

On 6th Sept., Magic Academy offers two magic classes, Traditional lunch, video and magic shows for magicians.

Thiruvananthapuram: As Kerala gets ready to be engulfed by the joy of Onam, its State festival, stage is being set ready for an Onam Magic Fest at the Magic Academy. The Fest is also going to be the 57th monthly PPC embellished with engrossing full day activities on 6th Sept.

Since the chief day of Onam falls on the second Saturday, the Academy has decided to shift the ensuing PPC to the first Saturday. The day will be an action packed one, comprising of two classes, one each in the fore noon and after noon; two video sessions, a grand Onam feast in the form of traditional ‘sadhya’ and magic shows. A class on Silk Magic by Leons George and another on ‘Effective Patter’ by Dibya Guha constitute the educative part of the festivities. Magic shows and video sessions add to the entertainment.

‘Computer, the magician’ fascinates children

Thiruvananthapuram: When the computing machine turned into a magician, kids found no limit for their enthusiasm. The Computer Magic camp held for children on 16th Aug. at the Magic Academy, has re-established a different kind of might the PCs possess. Blooming at the click of a mouse were bunches bafflement.

The teacher for the occasion was young magician P. Preeth who has been an animator with a Technopark-based institution. Suffering from a congenital disability in speech and hearing, Mr. Preeth has adopted the comfort of a laptop and screen for easy communication with his students.

When computer took the centre stage, youngsters found even the complex rope routines palatable. Limitations of human sight was exploited well to display some of the optical illusions on the screen. Many children easily learned a trick or two using coins, cards or ropes.

At the end of the class, when the director of the Academy, R. Raja Moorthy presented a memento to Mr. Preeth, it was indeed a recognition for this youth's deftness that helps him stand over disabilities. A darling disciple of Gopinath Muthukad, Mr. Preeth was one among the finalists in the Best Entertainer category competitions in the recently-held international magic festival, Vismayam 2008.

Magic Academy set to explore its alumni power

Thiruvananthapuram: 12-year-old Magic Academy is beginning to explore its alumni power. As a first step, when invitations were dropped a couple of weeks ago, several bounced back proving the addresses invalid. Turn out for the initial sit-together was meager. But the ideas gathered during the occasion were enough to energize the mission. Inspired profoundly by the debut meeting held here on 10th Aug., the Academy is now planning to call a full-fledged meeting of its alumni in the evening on 20th Sept. P.M. Mithra's Perfection Class on 12th April

With over 25 years of experience as a leading magician, P.M. Mithra is about to offer his first Master course in Magic.


Thiruvananthapuram: Master of perfect illusions, the one and only P.M. Mithra will guide the 52nd Perfect Performer Course to the heights of magical knowledge on 12th April at Magic Academy. The veteran, well known for his perfection in meticulously handling complex illusions on stage, will be teaching on his favourite subject, ‘Perfection on magic stage’.

“During my class, I will be much frank in disclosing the techniques I have been adopting in performing and mending of illusions and also in marketing magic in this modern era”, Mr. Mithra, holding three decades of admirable career in magical art, told VMN. He also pledges that there will be at least one illusion technique taught to the participants. Mr. Mithra however has put forward a condition that all the participants in his class should be active magicians who are frequented with magic performances on stage.


“A class on illusions and stage perfection will go astray unless the participants have live contact with the magic stage”, he pointed.

Julius finds a Hogwart’s school in India

12-year-old Julius Dein came to Kerala from London with his parents, not to enjoy from the nature’s bounty. While visiting ‘God’s own country’, his tender mind was nurturing a big ambition to learn more magic from Asia’s first Magic Academy, lead by India’s very own Houdini, Gopinath Muthukad. It was on 20/12/06 that he came to watch a regular performance by Rajamoorthy at the Academy, not alone, but accompanied by his parents.
Before joining a magic course, definitely he had to overcome the preliminary test of talent. But that was a cakewalk for this young prodigy who already had earned primary training in magical art from U.K., his homeland. Then began days of rigorous practice under the keen guidance of close-up King, Rajamoorthy. Each day was a stepping-stone for this tender talent. His magic caliber expanded just as the pairs of rubber band did between his fingers. After each session of training, Julius darted to Academy’s office to amaze the office staff with his new tricks, plucked fresh from the classroom. By this time, the rickshaw driver who would drop Julius from famous Kovalam beach to the Academy would have had rounds of good sleep in the world of dreams!
