Summer Magic Camp for children

Thiruvananthapuram: For children of age group 10-15, the Magic Academy’s Poojappura and Kazhakuttam branches organise summer vacation magic camp. The camp will be held during April-May at three centres: one in Kochi and two in Thiruvananthapuram.

Catching Cochin Kids

In Kochi, classes will begin on 6th of April and will conclude on 31st of May. Venue will be the Library Hall attached to the Priyadarshini Traffic Training Park governed by the District Council for Child Welfare (DCCW). The event will be inaugurated by the legal luminary, Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer at a function to be presided over by the District Collector, Dr. M. Beena at 10.30am on 6th of April. To give the initial thump, Gopinath Muthukad will present a stylish demonstration of Mathe-magic feat. In this remarkable show, children who gather there can also join the magician in making the magic happen.

The two-month-long programme is held with the support from the DCCW. Classes will be held from 10am to 4.30pm through Monday to Friday. This comprises of an hour long training in Yoga, couple of hours for scientific training in magical art and after noon sessions comprising of interesting creative sessions ranging from folk songs to origami and cinematography to acting.

For tots of Trivandrum

Venues for learning magic are two in this Capital city. Wonder World auditorium attached to the Magic Academy's headquarters at Poojappura and the Magic Academy Research Centre within the KINFRA Film & Video Park at Kazhakuttam are going to offer vacation course in magical art for children. Class timings at Poojappura will be from 9.30am to 4.30pm through Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Each day’s session comprises of Yoga (9.30am), scientific training in magical art (11am), practicing of magic (2pm) and a creative session comprising of juggling, origami, communication skills, origami (3pm).

At the MARC, classes will be from 8.30am to 1pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Eminent teachers

A team of eminent magicians led by magician Gopinath Muthukad will deal with the magic lessons whereas experts in corresponding areas will handle other sessions. At the end of the courses, there will be a practical test. Winners will get the Academy’s certificates. Meritorious students can join for a higher course through Sundays from June onwards.

The summer magic camp is designed also with an aim to inculcate social responsibility among children. The Academy looks forward to create a team of young conjurers capable of performing magic against tobacco, alcohol and drugs and to promote qualities like patriotism and communal harmony.

Five-day Magic Festival at Guruvayur

Guruvayur: Famous by virtue of the Lord Krishna’s temple, this town would become a stage for magic from 6th to 10th of December. Municipal town hall will be the venue for this five-day magic festival held by the Magic Academy for generating funds for building a centre for the traditional street magicians of the country. ‘Muthukad’s World of Magic’ the latest edition of Gopinath Muthukad’s illusion show at 6.30p.m. on everyday, is going to be the major attraction of the event.

The event will have two major objectives attached: one, the philanthropic cause of salvaging traditional street magicians who are on the verge of extinction and two, to popularize the art of magic. Mr. Muthukad’s service will be totally free so as to enable the Academy to accumulate maximum income out of the programme.

A Welcome Committee with M.L.A., K.V. Abdul Khader Municipal Chairman, M. Krishnadas and Crime Branch Dy. S.P., K.B. Suresh as patrons have been constituded for the programme.

Thiruvananthapuram: Vijayan Kadamkode, former teacher and all-time associate of the Magic Academy is packing his magic bag with a fresh stock of magic tricks. this master magician will open his bagful of tricks during the 58th Perfect Performer Course (PPC) slated for 11th Oct .

Guiding principle for the class will be that learning and teaching are precious and constant processes that should extend throughout a magician’s life.

There are umpteen of effects that we know, but easy methods to give required impact for the shows, are quite often unknown.

Hence Mr. Kadamkode’s endeavour will be to introduce a fresh metho dology of presentation for an engrossing stock of impromptu items. Common props like ropes, coins and cards will have sure place in his teachings.

But what would make his class extra ordinary, is a secret potion that every magician should know, for making their impromptu magic impressive.

Festivals in India provide ecstasy of greater degrees. October is going to witness three festivals to rejoice the nation. Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramzan), Durga Puja and the Dussehra are to raise high voltage of joy to light up the nooks and corners of this great land.

Composition of October celebrations become incomplete without Gandhi Jayanti. 2nd of Oct. every year marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the still glowing light of peace and nonviolence.

Festivals usually bestow great ideals for the society to imbibe. Ramzan clears our mind and soul from the soils of evil and greed. The fasting is a way of sacrifice, a sign of our compassion for the poor. Durga Puja and Dussehra are more similar to each other. Both send the single message of victory of the virtue over the evil.

India has been a nation with great resilience. This soil always allowed good cultures and customs to flourish. The secular composition of our nation, chiefly owes to this unique quality of its people. Celebrations, here are occasions not only of joy, but also of the great perseverance with which the Indian community has been incorporating its multi religious, multi communal and multi cultural make up.

Currently, magic shows have become a usual component during celebrations. While performing to the applause of packed audiences, let us also remember to foster the aforesaid secular resilience. While waving our magic batons, let virtues wax and evils wane.

A magic boy, who fights against his fate

This magic boy with his cherubic smile conquerred the hearts of Vismayam 2008 delegates. Even as a life threatening disease pose him a challenge too big for a tender boy like him, he is capable of pulling out rabbits from the dark of his life.

Meet Ashley Vanristell, a 10-year-old boy magician, who is suffering from congenital disorder of blood cells called Hypogammaglobulinemia. Per month, injections worth Rs.64000 is inevitable for him. The treatment has to be continued throughout his life or this tender bud will wilt at the deteriorating immunity of his body.

The meager income earned by his father and mother is nothing in front of this huge requirement. But Ashley is bold. In the world of creativity, he is a promise. Thiruvananthapuram: “Under Gopinath Muthukad, magicians of the country are inspired to carry a fight for the win of virtues over evils” said the Chief Minister, V.S. Achuthanandan. He was addressing one thousand magicians assembled from various parts of the country and abroad, after inaugurating the four-day global festival of magic, Vismayam 2008 at the University Senate Hall on 1st May. The CM described the international convention as an admirable movement and wished every success for the same.

Magic for tourism stressed
During his presidential speech, the Minister of Tourism and Home, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan pointed that the international confluence was held at a time when magic was becoming more and more popular as an art. His department’s decision to support the event was chiefly because of the proven quality of magical art as a tourism catalyst.

Foil attempt flayed
The Vismayam 2008 was an endeavour to liberate the art of magic to the masses which required support from all corners, said the Minister of Law, Sports and Youth Welfare, M. Vijayakumar.

“It was the unwanted suspicion a section of people had, that has foiled the proposed magic show by Mohanlal”, the Minister told.

Chairman of SB Global, R. Balachandran spoke on the occasion. Tourism Secretary, Dr. V. Venu welcomed the dignitaries and Executive Director of Magic Academy, Gopinath Muthukad tendered vote of thanks.

Earlier, magicians came to the venue taking a procession accompanied by traditional percussions, men holding decorated umbrellas and a contingent of mounted police. The gates to University Senate Hall were thrown open to the magicians by Dr. V. Venu.

Magician dares darting bullets pursuing peace mantra

Thiruvananthapuram: While standing bold showing his bare chest before a 12-bore gun loaded with lethal bullets, Bengal magician, Prince Sil had only one message to the society: let no more apostles of peace become prey to bullets of violence as happened to Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Nation nearly six decades ago. If the miscreant's bullets took the life of the Mahatma on a January 30th, now the magician's endeavour to bite a fast moving bullet was on yesterday the 30th April.

At 4.30pm, beneath the large statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Gandhi Park here, he stood wearing magic costumes and glittering headgear. Dignitaries including the Leader of the Opposition, Oommen Chandy; Mayor, C. Jayan Babu, Chairman of Indian Council for Gandhian Studies, Dr. N. Radhakrishnan and chieftain of Magic Academy, Gopinath Muthukad sat on one corner of the sprawling open air stage. Hundreds of people thronged around the park. A licensed gun was loaded with a lethal bullet that was duly marked X for identification, by Mr. Philip. Spectators kept turning their eyes between the magician on the stage and the gunner on the opposite side. In between the rifle and the magician was placed a piece of glass.

One, two, three… a big shot and shattering sound… the piece of glass was into a heap of broken pellets. And there falls a trembling magician, possibly hit by the bullet, with his face down on the stage. This was enough to shake a few feeble-hearted spectators. Ladies closed their eyes, some bend their head and closed their ears… Only a few seconds went and the magician stood on his feet with that winning smile. His well-trimmed mustache expanded to turn it into a very magical smile of a victorious magician. In his mouth, held was a dark brown coloured metal part of the bullet. It was re-examined by Mr. Philip, who declared that the X mark he has put was there intact.

The bullet is bitten: Magician shows the bullet deftly caught in his mouth.

Applause bestowed over Mr. Sil from all corners. And it was the final shot for the chain of curtain raiser programmes held for Vismayam 2008.

Magicians arrive with a longing for feeling the incredible India

Thiruvananthapuram: Five out of the seven leading foreign magic performers of Vismayam 2008 have arrived the city. This includes a Japanese regiment comprising of master magician Fukai Masahiro; his wife Kiyoka; girl magician, Hikari Furuyama and teen magic star, Shinichiro Ito. Others are Kenrick ICE McDonald of Los Angeles, U.S.A. and Marcel Oudejans from South Africa. At the Symphony Hall of Mascot Hotel, Chairman of Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, Cheriyan Philip introduced them before media.

All of them were beckoned by the magic charm of India. Mr. Kenrick expressed profound joy for being able to perform in a country about which they had heard a lot of imaginative tales. He has come with a special edition of his performance for Vismayam 2008. Illusion, captivation and enchantment would be three major features of his performance. Mr. Fukai told that a chance to stage magic in India was precious for him. Girl magician Hikari lost words to express her overwhelming happiness. The state of Shinichiro was not different.

K.T.D.C. Chairman, Cheriyan Philip welcomed the magic guests. Magic Academy Executive Director, Gopinath Muthukad was also present. Rajkumar, a magician from Delhi and Chaplin Yona a comedy magic expert from Coimbatore joined the foreign guests, as magical representatives of north and south India respectively. When these magicians performed magic tricks to faster their friendship bondage, it became a delightful sight.

The starting doze was a dexterous card manipulation by Mr. Kenrick. Then came Mr. Marcel who twisted in to several spirals, a strong steel fork held in the hands of General Convener of Vismayam 2008, M.B. Sanilkumar. On seeing this spectacle, spectators got their logic crushed. Mr. Fukai produced a Japanese Yen from his empty palm. The currency was first transformed into two five hundress rupee notes and finally into a fresh 1000 rupees currency. Magician Jorge Blass from Spain and Mirco Callaci from Argenta is to join the team, soon.

India's first Palace of Magic to be soon built in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: While honouring traditional north Indian street magician tribes who have assembled to take part in Vismayam 2008 the global magic fair, Chairman of Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC), Cheriyan Philip announced that a Palace of Magic will be soon realised in Kerala. The magical palace, first ever in the country will be a joint endeavour of KTDC and the Magic Academy. "Proposal is already submitted to the Central Government and we are waiting for an immediate approval of the same", Mr. Cheriyan Philip told. He added that the chief objective of the Magic Palace would be to bring to limelight the glory of Indian magical heritage thereby ensuring sustenance of traditional street magic of the country.

Later he felicitated members of street magic troupes by offering 'ponnada', the traditional shawl of honour in Kerala. (See photos below). Executive Director of Magic Academy, Gopinath Muthukad and General Convener of Vismayam 2008, M.B. Sanil Kumar were present.

Thiruvananthapuram: North Indian street magicians virtually stole show. The second precursor to Vismayam 2008 found the glory and gory of legendary street magic forms relived by ethnic magicians from north India. Several big illusion items usually found on the modern magic stages were so easily enacted along the pavements of Manaveeyam Veedhi by a group of traditional street magicians.

People were thronging on all sides and even on top of the adjacent walls, but the street magicians were undeterred. Instead, they adeptly relived the glorious Indian magical heritage. Blooming one after the other before the anxious eyes were vintage wonders.

Magician Ashik Hussain, Farooq, Shamim, Assam, Ass Mohamed and Chand Pasha from Kalakar Colony of old Delhi reached the city by train. All of them are representatives of a legion pursuing magical art for centuries.

Ashiq Hussain was the first prize winner in the first ever street magic festival held in 2005 under the auspices of the Magic Academy and the Cultural Ministry. Ashiq presented his masterpiece item, the Indian Basket with great dexterity. In the act, a boy first vanishes into a basket made of reed and takes the form of a venomous snake. A spectator who inserted his hand into the basket in search of the boy got a startling encounter with the slithering cobra. Then the black cobra returns to its former state only at the throw of a crystal ball.

Farooq, another street magician is an expert the ancient Green Mango Tree trick. But on the floors of Vismayam 2008, he staged an astonishing show of pulling out several nails from his mouth. Joining him, Ass Mohammed another street magician produced one after the other a number of things from his apparently empty mouth. And the audience around stood with their jaws down in awe.

Though flag bearers of a great magical heritage, they haven't yet received enough recognition from the authorities. Lack of money has denied even primary education for their wards.
For meeting the two ends together, they have no other way than performing through the shaky street sides. Fast urbanization is proving a real threat for them. Another agony has been the rough dealing by the Police.

Over these thorns of realities, they wander relentlessly in search of venues, carrying the bundle of a magical heritage. Revenue depends on the number of people gather. As modern electronic entertainment gadgets become common in cities as well as villages, only a feeble crowd remains to see these unsung heroes in magic.
Vismayam 2008 offers these street magic shows free for public on 2, 3 May at Hassan Maraikar Hall, thus becoming a platform for these heritage magicians to display their talents with all dignity and proud.

10 magicians ride 10 bikes blindfolded



Just after the Minister of Power, A.K. Balan concluded his fabulous magic of power saving message, 10 magicians assembled on the dais in uniforms. They were bearing one English alphabet each that could be together read as 'Save energy'. Delhi magician Rajkumar took the stage and gave a 'magical gesture' and then the alphabets changed to read, 'Vismayam 08'. Not over, these ten magicians approached 10 bikes. Their master and chief organizer of Vismayam 2008, Gopinath Muthukad took one after the other 10 thick clothe covers. Each cover was well placed before a thorough checking by dignitaries and the public.

Magic of letters...

Using these, eyes of the magicians were perfectly blindfolded. In utter darkness they stood for assistance to climb over their two wheelers. Assistants came and the magicians were on their vehicles.

A long whistle, a thunderous announcement from the piloting jeep and a zestful cheer giving by Mr. Rajkumar… the two wheelers rolled on to the main roads. Traffic was never curbed except for the initial crossing. The blindfolded magicians mixed into the hustling vehicles. Crossing chief landmarks of the city including the Museum, Corporation Office, Public Library and the University College, the blindfolded magicians' regiment approached the Government Secretariat. There at the finishing point long whistle was blown to high pitches. And it was time for the magical riders to press their brakes.

M.L.A. N. Sakthan, an ardent fan of magic, was there to unfold the ties. Ten pairs of eyes winked to the daylight. Ecstasy filled their hearts and the onlookers' too. Beaming in high spirits were ten magicians who got discipleship at the Magic Academy amid their commitments in different walks of life. If Karamana Raghu is retired from government service, his classmate at the Academy, Balan K.P. works as a Reserve Bank staff. Somasekharan Nair, an Engineer with the Public Works Department; B. Manojkumar, a Divisional Manager's Club Member Agent of Life Insurance Corporation of India; Sathyaseelan, an entrepreneur; Shaju Kadakkal, a high school teacher; Manu Poojappura, a television anchor; P. Preeth, a computer animator; Haris Taha, a social activist and Anand Mezhathur, Manager of magician Gopinath Muthukad's professional troupe, were among them.

Power transmission, Minister introduces a magical way


Hey Presto! Minister of Power, A.K. Balan tries to effect a magical transmission of power from his body to a spectator's on the stages of Vismayam 2008 curtain raiser.

Thiruvananthapuram: Power Minister A.K. Balan swayed the magic wand and that marked a befetting prelude to the Vismayam 2008 international convention slated for 1st to 4th of May 2008.
"Just look at my eyes and concentrate", Mr. Balan suggested to Rajan, a spectator who come to the stage for volunteering the Minister's magic show. On the temporary stage erected in front of the Kanakakunnu Palace, the Minister was seen with full authority of in his new role as a magician. Moments passed and the obedient spectator stared the much-respected 'magician' without a single move of his eyelashes. "Now I am transmitting my energy into your body", saying this, Mr. Balan approached the volunteer. When the Minister touched the spectator with a tester, the bulbs visibly glowed as if there was ample electricity transmitting from the human body.

Testified: M.L.A.s, N. Sakthan and V. Surendran Pillai find the bulb glowing when a tester was placed on the body of a magically electric-charged volunteer.

For his much-awaited public performance, the Power Minister had stocked two more tricks. In one, he could create a streamer with a message 'Save energy, save Kerala', from thin air. In another trick, four persons were allowed to pick electricity bills from a transparent polythene bag. Three of them could pick bills above Rs.8000 whereas a person who wore around his neck energy conservation banner could get a bottom rock bill of just Rs.400. The Minister is not a new entrant in the world of magic. Being a long-term associate of the magic field, he has stocked a brand new magic for inaugurating the blindfold ride. To him, magic is an engrossing hobby.M.L.A.s, N. Sakthan and V. Surendran Pillai were present, offering encouraging comments to the Minister who was in the magician's role.
Dispute on Mohanlal's feat flayed
Earlier while offering his inaugural address, Mr. Balan expressed his strong distress over the situation that led to the dropping of actor Mohanlal's magic. Mr. Lal was to perform his 'Burning Illusion' act that was slated as the first in the chain of preludes to the global magic fair. "Unnecessary disputes have become a bane for the society" he said. Any magician could understand what the world illusion means in the said 'Burning Illusion'. Still a cry and fury over the danger it could have posed were all unwanted, the Minister added.
Delhiete magician, Raj Kumar, who leads Delhi Academy of Magic, continued the energy conservation magic for a while.
