Magicians to perform as 'Mahabali' at Magic Fest

Thiruvananthapuram: At the Magic Academy led by Gopinath Muthukad, the vivacity of Onam is still in the air. The Academy is organising a variety of programmes on 11th of September for which around 50 magicians from the State are expected to assemble. Christened, ‘Onam Magic Fest’ the one-day event will have master classes and magic competitions for the participants.

General Secretary of the Purogamana Kala Sahithya Sangham, Prof. V.N. Murali will inaugurate the event at 9.30am. Honorary Director of the Academy, Chandrasenan Mithirmala will preside over. Master class on body loading techniques will be led by Hyderabad’s acclaimed magician, Ch. Shyam. Another class by an honorary director and faculty chief of the Academy, R. Raja Moorthy will lead magician to upper levels of modern close-up magic. In between, served for lunch will be a full-fledged traditional ‘Ona Sadhya’ on green leaves.

Adding spice to the programmes, will be a ‘Maveli Magic Competition’ for seniors and juniors at 1.30pm wherein magicians in the guise of the Asura King, 'Mahabali' will be competing to relive the glorious past through magical demonstrations. The King was synonym to justice, equality and good rule who was sent down beneath the world, by Lord Vishnu who came as a petite Brahmin boy. Not only this magical myth, but also the good time of the Asura King's rule will be relived by magicians on stage. Introduced for the first time, Maveli Magic will allow team presentations by magicians. Already three troupes of the seniors and three junior troupes from different parts of the State have registered for these competitions.

Crystal trophies sponsored by the Style Plus will be distributed to the winners during a valedictory at 5.30pm. A performance by the first and second prize winners will add charm to the closing ceremony. Evening gala shows are open for public.

Thiruvananthapuram: Vivacity of the State festival of Onam is going to cast a spell at the 81st Perfect Performer Course at the Magic Academy on 11th of September. Much awaited magic classes by acclaimed magic masters, discount sale of magic props, traditional feast and innovative ‘Maveli-Magic’ competitions are going to make the day memorable.

Magician Society of Tamil Nadu back on action

Coimbatore: Upholding the dreams of Tamil Nadu magicians, the Magician Society of Tamil Nadu (MST), founded and guided by illustrious magician M. Yona is back on action. With 85 magicians turning up for its first meeting held in October 2009, the MST is getting itself prepared to host an innovative meeting of magicians on 23^rd of March. On the day, waiting for the enthusiastic magicians will be a day full of erudite sessions from 10am to 5pm at Hotel Amuthasurabi, Poo Market here. Seven hours, and what would be there to benefit from? To be concise, the day is going to merit you a lot in magic. Or else, the teacher of the day is none other than R. Raja Moorthy, the Honorary Director of the Magic Academy.

The magic-filled day would begin with ‘One minute, one trick’ an innovative occasion wherein each participant will present a fast trick of not more than one-minute duration. This ice-breaking would be followed by a thoroughly educative as well as enigmatic teaching class by Mr. Moorthy, extending from 11.15am to 12.30pm and again from 2pm to 3pm. A must-to take part ‘Auction of magic materials’ will be held from 3.30pm onwards. And what awaits you during 3pm to 3.30pm is left for sheer suspense. Awesome day for Australian guests

Preeth's blasting magic in the semi finals

Here is the baffling, comical magical act by the Magic Academy product, P. Preeth during the semi finals of the ongoing Super Talent Show on Amrita TV. This show has got the doors opened for him to the final battle ground. The finals would require him to do a live performance before a public audience. In this video you find him shining along with his master and the Director of the Academy, R. Raja Moorthy who appears as Prof. Kulkarni, a magician who doesn't want his student to supersede on the magic stage.

Renowned for his close-up skills, this director of the Academy will be offering a full-day workshop for enthusiastic magicians on 9th of May during the 65th Perfect Performer Course. The class will give comprehensive knowledge in various aspects of close-up tricks. Special stress will be given to aspects pertaining to the sleights of hand. Improving presentation and exploring latest styles of presentation are also among the subjects.

I SHOT: With a magician for my NDTV Good Times show

The premise of my forthcoming show on Good Times is that you can get virtually anything custom-made for you at a reasonable price in India. Though we’ve done some of the obvious things – custom-made candles, shoes, luggage, clothes, etc. – I wanted to take the Made To Order concept further.
Among the more unusual things we’ve done is to get a top Bollywood composer to write a song for us on camera. And I’ve got a magician to invent a trick for me.
Yes, you read that right. India has many talented young magicians who create their own illusions and follow in the footsteps of David Blaine, abandoning the tradition of big-time stage shows. Why couldn’t one of these guys invent a bespoke trick for me?
After some searching, we found Rajamurthy, a brilliant young magician from Cochin. I know a little bit about magic (it is one of my more unusual passions) so I could see at once that Raja was an exceptional magician.
As the cliché goes, there are only seven basic magic tricks in the world. You judge a magician by how well he adapts these tricks for his own purpose, how he presents them and by how good his hands are.
The secret in all magic is to make the difficult seem effortless. A good magician must be able to move his hands so quickly that you have no idea of what he is really doing. If a magician is not good with his hands, then no matter how big his bag of tricks, he will never make it to the top grade.
Raja is astonishingly gifted and had me and my crew enthralled as he performed Blaine-style close-up magic, doing things right under our noses that shocked and surprised us.
I asked him to design a personalized trick for me. He took a picture of mine, turned it into a jigsaw puzzle and performed a seeming miracle with the pieces of the jigsaw.
I won’t tell you exactly what he did. For that you’ll have to see the show. But you won’t be disappointed.
