Ganithavismayam –magical homage to maths wizard Ramanujan

Thiruvananthapuram: Magicians and intellectuals in the field of science paid magical homage to maths wizard Srinivasa Ramanujan on April 26th at Priyadarshini Planetarium here. The event, titled, Ganithavismayam organized by the Magic Academy was well supported by the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment and the Life Insurance Corporation of India. Noted Mathe-magician from Coimbatore, Cijam Jammu inaugurated the event. The Academy’s Director, Chandrasenan Mithirmala gave introductory speech. Gifted magician from Karnataka, Prahlad Acharya was present.
Benefitting from the occasion was magicians from different States and budding magicians of the Academy’s summer magic camp. Mr. Jammu and Mr. Acharya were displaying their splendid skills in creating engrossing combinations of mathematics and magic.  Both demonstrated innovative magic fostered with aspects of maths. The duo also showed how fascinatingly magic promoted the value of mathematics. When told in magical language, mathematics became more malleable, comprehensible and enjoyable to all.
Vismayam 2008 champion, Dayanidhi made a surprise appearance to the cheers of the audience.  A crash magic gala performance by Mr. Jammu marked the finale.
An event like Ganithavismayam participating native magicians having ability in the area of Mathe-magic, was held for the first time. The programme is envisaged as a year-long one that would be extended to schools and colleges. In designing the event, the Academy was inspired by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s recent remark that the country needed more mathematicians.
