My experience with David Copperfield

Of all the magicians in the world, only a few have succeeded in creating an admiration among other fellow magicians. And all through my life, I have adored one magician more than any other, David Copperfield. It was during my collage days, way back in 1985, that a friend from abroad gifted me a very special Christmas present, a video cassette named ‘15 Years of David Copperfield’. I went through the tape the very same day as it lead me into a world of excitement, wonder and pure magic. It was the day I stated adoring the great magician David Copperfield. From that day till now, I have witnessed with awe, his spectacular magic several hundred times through DVDs as well as youtube. In him, I found a sense of timing, humor, body language and a love for details that excels any other magician. His magic always delivers an experience that equals the beauty of sweet poetry. His profound ability to explore the limitless possibilities of magic astonished me more than anything.

One of my biggest ambitions was that I should one day meet the greatest magician of my lifetime, David Copperfield. After watching him on screen for 26 years, that dream finally became fruitful during the December of 2011. It was a magical day gifted by my friend Hari Nair on our way to Huston for a magic show. It was Hari Nair who organized my ticket for the show as well as a meeting with the master magician thereafter. I impatiently kept shifting in my seat and occasionally kept pinching myself in disbelief during the trip from Huston to Las Vegas. My dream was about to come true and the excitement was far beyond comparison.

We were staying at MGM Grand, the same hotel that encloses the Hollywood Theatre where David Copperfield was performing. From the airport to MGM grand, the billboards on either sides of the road flashed various scenes of the Copperfield show and it certainly didn’t help me to hide my excitement. During daytime, we walked the streets of Vegas surrounded by people, mostly intoxicated by alcohol, some excited over their luck and others brooding over their losses at the casinos. By 6.30pm we occupied our table marked A6 in the front row. The stage was so close that we could touch it from our seats. On a simple looking stage, a screen flashed the victory saga of the king of magical entertainment and pretty soon the theatre became full. Exactly at 7pm, the much soothing voice of Copperfield echoed the hall. In the short silence between his words, I could hear my heart pounding with excitement. Just when I thought that I could no longer hold back my exhilaration, 21 Emmy Award winning magician, David Copperfield appeared on a motorbike as if by real magic. I couldn’t believe my eyes for the first time in my life. There on stage is the man I have seen only on TV screen, with the same walk, voice and naughty smile, armed with the magic to steal everyone’s heart. For the next one and a half hours, the stage filled with magic that words will fail to describe.

After the spellbinding show, as everyone walked out, some occasionally shaking their head refusing to accept what they have just witnessed, a person came to us and asked us to wait for a few minutes. After about 10 minutes, we were invited onto the stage, closer to the master of illusion. Then there followed a little introduction, a chat and photo session. I invited him to India. He acknowledged his interest to come and asked to mail the details.

Who told magicians rarely respect one another? Here is a legend who himself proves to be an admirable model of mutual respect and love, I thought.

As we walked out of the theatre, I hugged my friend Hari Nair, thanking him for the wonderful moment he gifted me and behind him, I wiped the tiny tear of joy that somehow escaped irrespective of my earnest effort to prevent it from being seen.

Magic Academy’s ‘Vanish Fever’ beckons you

Thiruvananthapuram: Magic Academy has come up with a panacea to eradicate exam fever from the minds of school students. Titled, ‘Vanish Fever’, it’s a magical way of creating awareness in younger minds to gradually develop enthusiasm towards examinations. “Examination is your friend who helps you to prove that you are brilliant”, is the message upheld by the campaign.

The project was launched successfully at a city-based Viswaprabha English Medium School. The inaugural session was handled by Dr. Rajith Kumar of Sree Sankara Collge, Kalady. The response among students and teachers of the school was awesome. Just as things vanish on stage, fear about exams vanished from their minds, young participants opined. “Now I am a close friend of exams” one of them said excitingly.

The Academy’s awareness programme is aimed at supporting students, who are to face exams during March-April. The Academy is planning to spread the benefit of its new project to the entire schools of the State in a step by step manner. Tips to overcome mental stress, anxiety and fear are handed down to participants in a thoroughly captivating way. For accomplishing the mission, the Academy has roped in psychologists and educational experts.

World’s first university supported magic course: Sreekumar bags first rank

Thiruvananthapuram: S. Sreekumar, native of Pallippuram, who is an LIC Development Officer fetched first rank and Govind P. Dev a higher secondary student from Karamana bagged second rank in the world’s first university supported magic course conducted at the Magic Academy. A nurse magician Dileep S, Health Inspector Juju R V and bank manager Shajahan N managed to position with first class in examination. With this success in the recently concluded Certificate Course in Magical Art jointly conducted by the Kerala University’s Centre for Adult Continuing Education Extension (CACEE) and the Magic Academy, the winners got their names etched on the annals of magic.

LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India) is one of the prestigious government owned institutions of the country for which business is no gimmick but real service to society. Mr. Sreekumar, who is a committed business promoter for LIC, at first, had a notion that magic was mere gimmick. But the classroom experience at the Academy was proving otherwise. Unveiling before him and his classmates were hitherto unknown potentials of magic and magicians. Each class was offering them not only the knowhow on new tricks, but also the ways to use magic as a magnificent tool for social awareness.

Thiruvananthapuram: For the great magic soul who started magic at the age of 12 in 1928 and departed the world 12 years before at the age of 83, it was a sumptuous tribute paid by the magic fraternity. On 16^th of January at the Wonder World auditorium of the Magic Academy, a memorial day was fittingly organised recalling Bhagyanath who led seven magically enriched decades.

The function, chaired by noted author Dr. George Onakoor was inaugurated by the Minister for Forest and Sports, K.B. Ganeshkumar. The departed magician’s daughter and cine actress, Vidhubala was also present on the dais. “Bhagyanath is an immortal guru for the art of magic and continues as an undying light of guidance” the minister said. The minister also expressed gladness to see that the Magic Academy led by Gopinath Muthukad was inspiring generations to the world of magic.

During his welcome address, Mr. Muthukad, who is Executive Director of the Academy, disclosed that his institution was planning to hold inter-state magic competitions for magicians of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Mrs. Vidhubala inaugurated ‘Prof. K. Bhagyanath Library’ a newly incepted reading room at the Academy. Speaking on the occasion she declared her willingness to donate valuable book collection of her father to the Academy. She also promised to sponsor prize money for the winners of the inter-state magic contests.

Banker turned magician, Sreekanth and the Academy’s Director, Chandrasenan Mithirmala spoke on the occasion. Performances by young magicians, Abhinraj and Ammu Muthukulam offered a dose of enticing magical entertainment.

According to the lonely planet, an international-multi language publication for tourists’ advices the Academy of magical sciences as the eighth one in the listed thirty tour activities in Thiruvananthapuram.

Ahmadabad: A reputed performer, magician J P Banerjee from West Bengal won the second prize in senior citizen’s magic competition held here in Karnavati club in November. The competition was organized as part of the variety magical hallmark programmes of Sammohanam, the national magic convention. Vandipperiyar: People of different districts, including the well known cine artist Suresh Krishna, were being washed away in a torrent ended in a fraction of moment. A magical scene in Magician Gopinath Muthukad astonished the mass in Vandipperiyar. The magic titled ‘Jala’pravaaham which later literarily turned to a ‘Jana’pravaaham was the key magic performance on this subject to raise the solidarity and concerns, where he has made them re-appear as a hope to the people by unity and appropriate action.

Magicians’ might to wipe out societal woes was proved once more, this time, over Mullaperiyar that is already a national issue that has put over thirty lakhs of people under the fear of an approaching disaster. Muthukad and many other magicians like Mayan Vaidyar Shah, Haris Taha, Shaju Kadakkal and John J Mampilly were few in the forefront to educate the common people and to express the solidarity with the people under the fright of dam disaster.

Kochi: By staging a magic show at the High Court Junction, Ernakulam the magic society expressed solidarity on the Mullaperiyar issue. Through the show, Magician Mayan Vaidyar Shah showed what would happen once Mullaperiyar Dam brakes. He also performed a magic show that provided the solution to the problem. “It is necessary that a solution be found by the governments for the people who are extremely worried about the impending disaster from the Mullaperiyar Dam,” he said.

Kochi: Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy Sunday said that magician Gopinath Muthukad empower drug free Kerala programme with his continuous magical programmes and the Magic with a Mission in Kochi is one in its stream. Inaugurating the finale of Magic with a Mission organized by Magic Academy in association with different government organizations, the Chief Minister said that State does not have any policy to support the use of alcohol and will not go with any such decision.

“It is shame on us as we are the toppers in alcohol consumption and other similar addictions. Our income from excise department is certainly on the higher side; but the consequences teach us to excise them.” Chief Minister said.

“We have to fight together for the better tomorrows of our young generation. Government will position forefront to support its best for the move. The initiation and participation of magician like Muthukad is really significant to the objective.” He added.

A magical mission for public awareness against the consumption of alcohol, drug and tobacco was started in town on November 23^rd to mark its state wide launch. The mission was with an aim to spread the awareness of additional adverse and tune the youngsters with a right thought for their bright future.

The public meeting was presided over by Hibi Eden M L A and minister for excise K Babu given the anti-drug message. Famous film maker Siddiq led the oath taking in the conclusion ceremony where Gopinath Muthukad briefed the objectives and course of mission. District collector P I Sheikh Pareeth IAS, Corporation Mayor Tony Chammani, Member Secretary of State Youth Welfare Board N Madhusudanan Asari and Excise joint commissioner M A Francis also spoke.

A specially designed Magic workshop for the edutainment was widely used by the schools and colleges in the district. Workshop on mission days flavored with variety sessions counting magic, literature, psychology, medical sciences and social aspects for participants. Dr. Rajith Kumar of Sree Shankara Academy, Regional Cancer Centre oncology division assistant professor Dr. Jayakrishnan, Counselor of Palai Adart Centre N M Sebastian, High Court Advocate Charly Paul, Magician Chandrasenan Mithirmala and Vinod Kedamanagalam were leading various classes. Anti-tobacco cell and Student Police cadets with district collector has joined mission in addition to Red Cross society, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and other school children. Students were certified for their participation and will be utilized as resource persons in the next level awareness sessions.

Prominent personalities including social workers, writers and film makers expressed their commitment in the venture. Dr M Leelavathy, M K Sanu, Chemmanam Chacko, P I Shankaranarayanan, film actor Siddiq, actress Kavya Madhavan, actor Kailash, film maker Mecartin and many others joined the mission activities.

Mission will be taken to rest of the districts too according to the director of magic Academy. The first phase of awareness programme designed as mission 5 days was jointly supported by Excise Department, Kerala State Youth Welfare Board, Cochin Corporation, district authorities and Federal Bank.

MAGIC with a MISSION hits & thrills the youth

Kochi: Film maker could be a magician; that too with a social responsibility. Well known Malayalam film maker Mecartin turns to a magician to endorse with his commitment to magic and its mission. He has staged a magical skit to extend the awareness against obsession of smoking and drinking at Ernakulam Town Hall as part of the Magic with a Mission of Magic Academy.

Magic skit, where he has keeping away the flown cigarette to him and later on made disappear was an alluring act by Mecartin and it was followed by an un-emptying pour of liquor to a clear glass. The dramatization of the theme was performed with the assistance of Vinod Kedamangalam in the magic workshop for youngsters and students on the fourth day of the ‘mission 5 days’.

Enthusiasm of students will certainly be worked out to convey to the rest the campus, according to a teacher attended the mission programme and they have repeated the need of such edutainment programmes with magic to any range of people including our students and youngsters.

‘Voter turnout results through magic were higher’: Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi: “In Kerala, Election commission involved the State’s most celebrated magician Gopinath Muthukad to package our education in his greatly entertaining format. I am happy to inform you that the results were even higher in terms of Voter participation, as evident from the historical voter turnout witnessed” the chief election commissioner of India S Y Quraishi stated in his valedictory address here at 5^th International Entertainment Conference. He was referring to the election awareness magical programme of Magic Academy titled as “We the People”.

Organized by the Kerala State Election Commission, Muthukad's performance titled ‘We the People' was in a bid to educate voters and increase their participation in the process of democracy.

According to the CEC, "Edutainment" is the best response of present times for making cognitive, physical, emotional and social development faster and smoother.

“Entertainers hold sway over people’s minds, whether one admits or not. Encouraged by our previous achievements, entertainers in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala to advance voters education, not only for turnout, but also for ethical voting, that is to reject inducements and bribes as a consideration” he added.

The first Entertainment Conference was held in 1989 in California; since then international conferences have taken place in the US, Holland and South Africa. This year India- with its kaleidoscope of arts, cutting edge technology and dynamic movie industry – was the host of the 5^th international EE Conference. The theme this year was to address social and health issues highlighting the world’s most vulnerable - women and children and expected to establish a vibrant platform for post conference networking and action, according to the organizers.

According to S Y Quraishi, Election Commission has had its lessons. Having taken up the goal of Greater Participation of Citizens for a Stronger Democracy, entertainment based education is going to be a definite component of our strategies under the newly created SVEEP Division. In the coming series of state elections, they will engage this method to the hilt for enhancing voters’ turnout. EC will use this every time for achieving registration of all eligible citizens on the rolls.

Kochi: An initiative of Magic Academy with State Youth Welfare Board, Excise Department, the Cochin Corporation and the district administration has alerted the youth with a ‘skull’ as the bottom-line of addictions with alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The mission inauguration was with a conceptual magic by Minister of Excise K Babu by dropping two pieces of papers, written ‘alcohol’ and ‘drugs’ in it to a crystal bowl which turned to a skull as the outcome.

Enthralled audience at the Town Hall reaffirmed their commitment with an oath taking lead by well known film actor Siddique at the inaugural function. 'The International Year of Chemistry 2011 (IYC 2011) is a worldwide celebration and under the unifying theme “Chemistry—our life, our future”. The year 2011 will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Madame Marie Curie—an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to science. The year will also be the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies, providing a chance to highlight the benefits of international scientific collaboration.

Considering the highlights of the year in Chemistry, Academy redefines its next PPC of October 8th to put across the role of chemistry in magic and its mutual bondage for the humankind. Street magician Ashiq Ali bags ‘best performer’ title in magic fair

Thiruvananthapuram: 62-year-old street magician Ashiq Ali of Kalendar colony in Delhi has become champion of the magic competitions held as part of the three-day ‘Indiajaal’ national integration magic fair that came to a close here on the Independence Day (15/08/2011). Mr. Ali, who is an expert in traditional Indian style of performing magic in open air venues defeated his modern counterparts who for their demonstrations had to resort to closed indoor stages. During the closing ceremony held in the evening, the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy handed over a cash prize of Rs.50000 sponsored by the State Bank of Travancore; a memento and a certificate of appreciation to the magician. A roaring audience at the AKG Memorial Hall was taken aback to perfect silence for a moment as the street magician became emotional and broke into tears embracing the CM first and then Gopinath Muthukad, the chief organiser of the event.

Mr. Ali’s debut in magic was on the streets of Delhi five decades before as an assistant to his father. Magic today is his only means to find square meal a day. His masterpiece item include disappearing his 17-year-old son Sharooq Khan, appearing him back and cutting his neck using a knife – all in daylight in open venues, right before the closely scanning eyes of spectators. He was adjudged winner by a special jury comprising of magicians and non-magician members of the audience.

During his speech, the CM announced that his government would support all progressive programmes undertaken by the Magic Academy for using the potential s of the magical art as a medium for social service and mass communication. He distributed prizes to winners in various competitions. The function was presided over by the president of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Perumbadavam Sreedharan. Deputy General Manager of the Cochin Shipyard Ltd., M.D. Varghese and Chief General Manager of SBT, S. Balachandran honoured magicians. Mr. Muthukad gave welcome address and Director of the Academy, Chandrasenan Mithirmala conveyed vote of thanks.

In the morning Major Ravi, an army officer turned cine director who uses his cinemas for promoting national integration, led an Independence Day rally taken by the magicians on the city roads. At the conclusion of the rally, he hoisted the National Flag and addressed a gathering of students of the St. Joseph’s school and magical artistes. “The feel of being an Indian should be the only caste and religion for all Indians”, he told. In reply, NCC and Naval cadets performed acrobatic drill whereas magician Abhinraj staged a magic show. Mr. Muthukad offered a memento of honour to Mr. Ravi.

Thiruvananthapuram: The tri-colour programme of native magicians’ spring to emboss the significance of traditional Indian street magic and patriotism with ever first magic convention on national integration, INDIAJaal. New Delhi: The Prime Minister heartily congratulated Muthukad for winning the highly-rated award and working for spreading social messages through the art.

As the Kerala-based magician performed his ‘patriotic magic’ using ropes of three colours representing the national flag and explained how the nation should come over religious animosity and feel united. In the trick, the magician tied together three ropes in saffron, white and green and in a flash converted them into single unbroken piece having three colours.

The magician explained how Hindus and Muslims fought each other like different ropes and how India still faced issues of communalism and terrorism today through the magic.

“We are all Indians’,’ Dr Singh excitedly yelled as Muthukad was explaining “…like three ropes merging into one single thread, we are not Hindus, not Muslims, not Christians but….’’

New Delhi: Gopinath Muthukad was presented with the prestigious International Merlin Award, billed as Magic’s Oscar, at a grand ceremony that glowed with magical aura in plenty. Hundreds of leading magicians from across the country, large number of fans, and top political leaders attended the elegant award ceremony, accompanied by the performance by six top award-winning performers in the country.

Hon’ble Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs and Civil Aviation, Shri Vayalar Ravi, Hon’ble Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Prof. K V Thomas, Hon’ble Delhi Chief Minister Smt Sheila Dikshit, and Mr T K A Nair, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, led the packed Mavlankar Hall to salute the winner.

The President of International Magicians Society (IMS), Mr Tony Hassini presented the award, comprising a statuette designed in 1968, to Muthukad as hundreds of fellow magicians gave a standing ovation. Baby on Thursday stated Magic will have a space in school curriculum and the government’s initiation to include it in state school youth festival will be resulted positively. The Kerala University – CACEE in association with Magic Academy organised a formal inauguration of certificate-diploma courses in magical art.

Minister has emphasized Magic’s role in education, especially in Mathematics and suggested Magic Academy to prepare a project module for SCERT to include in curriculum. He has highlighted the vital role of Prof. Gopinath Muthukad in exploring magic to common public with academy activities.

Minister has done a magical inauguration of the courses by getting a book ‘Tarbell Course in Magic’, the encyclopaedia of magic, from an empty screen box with magic wand at Wonder World Auditorium, Poojappura. The book has later presented to Master Muhammed Shanu, as a token of appreciation, who earlier presented his charming magic show which entertained the audience as well.

‘’You may not find it entertaining. This show is for a serious reason,’’ magician Muthukad had said with a cheering face at the very outset itself, as if forewarning those who anticipated a typical Muthukad show.

His words were backed up by Nalini Netto, Chief Electoral Officer, who acknowledged that Muthukad’s poetic licence was constrained by the Commission’s insistence on preserving the serious nature of the show.

The 25-minute-long show had plenty of video clips proclaiming the value of democracy, characters who symbolised the virtues of life in a democratic country and some magic tricks in between. Film Actor Suresh Krishna played the role of a despot who is ousted by a public upheaval. The magician brings about the end of autocracy and he makes the merciless despot vanish. The significance of democratic system is explained as an inept technocrat is coaxed to the polling booth by the ever-pleasant magician.

Finally, the magician, the despot and the crew all dressed in white line up with ‘Vande mataram’ ringing in the background. The curtains come down reminding once again the need to vote and preserve the value of democracy. A fully packed crowd was present at the Tagore Theatre to witness the show.

Thiruvanathapuram: There was magic in the air as the city's very own 'Dum-bledore' Gopinath Muthukad mesmerised 'Muggles'. Muthukad 25- minutes 'magical' skit at Tagore Theatre high lighted the right to vote.

Organised by the Kerala State Election Commission, Muthukad's performance titled 'We the People' was in a bid to educate voters and increase their participation in the process of democracy. Artistes from Muthukad's Magic Academy participated in the event.

Says Muthukad, who is known for blending magic with a social cause: "We were approached by the State Election Commission for this project. The programme's script was written by Sreekanth kottakkal, a journalist. We then showed the script to the Election Commission who gave us the green signal."

Th skit, says Muthukad, begins with footage of the recent upsurge in Libya and then shifts to the scenes on stage.

An autocrat played by actor Suresh Krishna runs the land with an iron fist. Muthukad then appears on the stage and describes to the janata the beauty of democracy.

The autocrat disappears and the democratic public in the form of a girl dressed in white fills the autocrat's empty throne.

The magic wand is waved again by Muthukad but this time on the young man who is not keen on democracy and election. The skit ends with young joining the line of the voters at a poll booth. The magician has worked his magic.

International Merlin Award for Magician Gopinath Muthukad

The world’s largest magician’s organisation, the International Magicians Society (IMS) of USA, has selected noted illusionist and stunt performer Gopinath Muthukad of Kerala for this year’s prestigious International Merlin Award. Today the famous illusionist and the Board of Director of IMS, Franz Harary formally declared the award in the press conference that held at Delhi. The Merlin Award to magic is what Oscar is to cinema.

The Jury of IMS has selected Mr. Muthukad for their paramount recognition in recognition of the inimitable contributions the magician has made for the over-a development and popularization of magical art and science during his 35 years of professional career. These include setting up of Asia’s first Magic Academy in Kerala in 1996; organizing of a series of international magic conventions titled, Vismayam in 1996, 2000, 2006 and 2008; innovation brought to magical demonstrations; re-enactments of several Houdini stunts and magical sensitization held all over India in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2010 for fostering social values and Gandhian philosophies. Muthukad employs magic as a medium to convey his messages to society. He is also noted for his staunch crusades against social evils of tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse. 98th birth anniversary of P.C. Sorcar Sr.

Thiruvananthapuram: He once said, “When asleep I breathe magic; when awake I work magic.” He is P.C. Sorcar Senior, a magical luminary widely respected as the ‘father of Indian magic’. 23rd of February marks the 98th birth anniversary of the doyen. He was born on 23 February 1913 in a middle-class family in the village of Ashekpur in Tangail district, now part of Bangladesh. Attracted to magic early, he learned magic from Ganapati Chakravarti. His debut show was as a school student. A star who knew well the calculations of magical manipulations, Sr. Sorcar possessed Honours in Mathematics. Magic being his heart and soul, he once changed his family surname ‘Sorcar ’ into the English word ‘Sorcerer ’. At least 20 books about magic were authored by him in English, Bangla and Hindi. A set of illusions namely, X-ray eye, sawing a human body and water of India are still known with his name.

He could perform in over 70 countries. Many prizes including the Phoenix Award, USA; German Goldbar and the Golde Laurel Garland awards and the Dutch Tricks Prize were bestowed upon him. Sr. Sorcar died on 6 January 1971 in Japan, but continues to be a living source of inspiration for generations of native magicians.

German magic produces onions aplenty

Thiruvananthapuram: German magician Kolja Calton and his associate Jan Jerken love incredible faces of India very much. Mr. Calton performs magic well. For the past couple of weeks both are zigzagging the country, taking footage of magic and magicians.

Last Saturday their turn was at the Magic Academy renowned as the Asia's first and led by ace illusionist Gopinath Muthukad. The German guests made their presence magical. Thanks to the nimble hands of Mr. Calton. At the swaying of his wand created from nowhere were something the entire country of India would very much desire to get: many many onions! "I heard that the prices of onion is bringing tears to many housewives. Hence my magical German onions are here" Mr. Calton said laughingly after his brief performance at the Academy laughingly.

Earlier the guests were formally welcomed by Mr. Muthukad and the Academy's Director, Rajamoorthy. Clad in Indian dress, the German magician then performed the ace trick of cups and balls in traditional Indian style to leave Mr. Muthukad and members of the academy awestruck.

Thiruvananthapuram: This year’s ‘Indrajala Puraskaram’ the annual award instituted by the Magic Academy goes to magician Pradeep Hudino, Beypore’s pride in magic. This is in recognition of the contributions he has exerted during his 28-year-long career as a magician. His unique accomplishments including escape magic stunts, fairs and festival of magic he has organized, inception of a magical theme park and recognitions he could already earn have made him eligible for the award. The award comprising of a purse of Rs.10000, citation and memento will be presented to him by the minister of culture, M.A Baby on 31st of January at the Academy’s Wonder World Auditorium. Born as K.P. Pradeep, magician Pradeep Hudino is the third in the lineage of Indrajala Puraskaram awardees.

Risky track

Mr. Hudino has sharpened his magical talent through insistent experimentations. Very adventurous Rail Track Escape was staged by him successfully on 30th of September 1983. Though he was shackled and laid across the rail track just in front of a fast approaching Mangalore-Madaras express train, he could work the magic well to escape unscathed, leaving thousands of spectators awestruck.

A police case was registered by the authorities against this act, but it could not douse his spirit. After seeing this demonstration, ace novelist, Vaikom Mohammed Basheer ordained him the heir to Harrry Houdini. Thereafter on magic stages, he became famous by the adopted name, Pradeep Hudino.

A set of daredevil performances including 450km blindfold motorbike riding act that found a place in the LIMCA Book of Records and great underwater mystery in 1997 are also to his credit. Mr. Hudino has tried the fire escape act and propeller escape act with huge success though his audiences had to pass such moments only with a bated breath.

Mr. Hudino has been a recipient of a number of recognitions, titles and awards. 2001 edition of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award that was issued as Vazhakunnam Puraskaram in connection with the centenary of the magic doyen of Kerala, was offered for this enthusiastic performer.

The Magic Academy in assosiation with Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension (CACEE), Kerala University opened admission for Certificate in Magical Art (CMA).

Ever since its inception in 1996, the Acdemy has been offering myriads of magic courses ranging from beginner's course to a higher study followed by continuing eduaction. No art, no technology or no tread of information sustains time unless it is handed down to the descerning. At the Academy, hence the process of magical education is an undaunted one. The certificate in Magical Art (CMA) offers professional magical training which provide practices and principles needed for learning and perorming the magical art. T h i r u v a n a n t h a p u r a m : INDIAJaal, the first ever patriotic magic fair slated for 25, 26 of January 2011 has been postponed to 14th and 15th of August. The Magic Academy has come forward with the idea of INDIAJaal to showcase the love and commitment the native magicdom have for the Nation.

However the registrations, especially for competitions, have not reached the expected mark. Tremendous response received from the dealers was the only exception. The decision to postpone INDIAJaal was taken with the objectives of bringing maximum benefit to the participants and upholding national integration to its deserving heights. “Considering the significance of the great event, we don’t have any way other than rescheduling”, Executive Director of the Academy, Gopinath Muthukad says. The decision was taken, considering the Academy’s commitment to quality and to adhere to the ever growing expectations of delegates and dealers, he added.

While conducting the event on its newly scheduled dates, the Academy will be sticking to the benchmarks set by its previous conventions so that it becomes another historic magic fete. Delegate fee for the August convention will be Rs.1500 per person. But no additional fee is required for those who have already registered for the INDIAJaal.

Welfare schemes for magicians

Thiruvananthapuram: Come the New Year, the Magic Academy will be offering half a dozen of welfare schemes for the magical artistes of Kerala. Important among them are a couple of accident and medical ഇന്‍ഷുറന്‍സ് for free. Also in the list are an award titled, Indrajala Puraskaram; free distribution of magic equipments worth Rs.5000 for financially backward magicians and educational scholarships of Rs.2500 for two-year higher studies for the children of magicians. Pioneers in the insurance and banking business, the State Bank of Travancore and the United Insurance Company are joining hands with the Academy for realising these innovative schemes.

According to the Academy, the new welfare measures are designed to mitigate the difficulties faced by the wonder weavers and their families. The Academy has already instituted district level co-ordinators for effectively implementing these schemes. A list of beneficiaries will be prepared based on the recommendations received by these co-ordinators.

Offered for the first time for magicians, the free medical insurance coverage up to Rs.100000 will be granted for 140 magicians and their close family members across state (10 from each district) based on the annual income certificate issued by the village officer. The magician, his/her spouse, parents and children below the age of 22 will come under the insurance cover. Entire magicians of the state will be brought under the coverage of free accident insurance for Rs.5 lakhs. According to this scheme titled, Union Suraksha, in the event of death or complete paralysis of the insuree due to accident, full amount of insurance will be granted to the nominee. In the case of loss of one of the organs, a sum of Rs.2.5 lakhs will be granted. Premium amounts for the two schemes will be paid by the Magic Academy. Rules and regulations of the supporting institutions namely, the SBT and the United Insurance Company will be applicable during instances of claims. Beneficiaries should possess an account with any of the SBT branches. Specified formats of the applications are available with the SBT branches. Duly filled in application forms with photos should be forwarded through district co-ordinators.

Indrajala Puraskaram is an award comprising of a purse of Rs.10000, citation and memento. This will be conferred to a magician from Kerala who has contributed the most for the gross development and sustenance of the art. Veteran magicians, P.M. Mithra and Junior Mandrake has previously won this title, considered to be the biggest award in the country instituted to magicians by a magicians’ organisation. Entries for the award have to be forwarded through the district co-ordinators of the Academy.

Educational scholarship of Rs.2500 per year for two-year higher studies will be offered to the children of magicians who could secure meritorious results in the 2010 SSLC or equivalent exams. Copy of the relevant mark list attested by a gazetted officer and a certificate from the head of the institution where the candidate currently studies should be forwarded through the coordinator of the district.

Free distribution of magic equipments worth Rs.5000 is meant for financially poor magicians. Selection will be based on the original copies of the annual income certificates issued by village officers.

Darjeeling: A place 7800 feet above sea level, turned out be a bedrock on which the Mission India led by Muthukad and crew stood to declare unity and strength to 107 infantry battalion soldiers of the Indian Army at Jalapahar. The Mission India loudly proclaiming determination to fight with tooth and nail against extremism and partisan discrimination,the event becomes a sumptuous agape of magic.

The demonstration of Muthukad and team was all armed against the sectarianism and favored to foster the spirit of unity among the soldiers against sectarianism neglecting the biting cold in order to eliminate the sectarian who initiated violence for Gorge-land. Hundreds of soldiers convened at the specially made venue in the back drop of Kanchan Ganga. The soldiers raced slogan welcoming all the members of the magic group who spread the message of undivided India.

Commanding Officer Lt. Col. P.K.S. Bhatia inaugurated the function. Second in command Lt. Col. Rajan Khanuja introduced the units to soldiers. He applauded and acclaimed the six young girls and other members who spear-head and spread the message of patriotism. Shillong: On the second anniversary of the 2008 October 30 serial bomblasts in Guwahati, the capital city of Meghalaya was kept under the spell of Gopinath Muthukad’s magic show carrying messages of peace and harmony.

The open air performance at the Police Bazar here has marked the beginning of the northeast leg of the magician’s Mission India endeavour against terrorism and violence launched nationwide with the support of the Ministry of Defence.

First IPS officer from the Bodo tribe and present Governor of Meghalaya, R.S. Mushahari inaugurated the show. The Governor said that if Senior Sorcar hoped to vanish the attackers through his magic during the Indo-China war, Mr. Muthukad had shown to the world the strength of love that a magic show can unleash to abbrogate the menace of terrorism. Army Commanding Officer, A.K. Sood; Col. Raphael and BSF Commander, A.K. Singh were among the dignitaries present. Thousands of people thronged the open venue to witness the patriotically charged show.

Indian Army offers food and accommodation for the magical entourage whereas the fuel for their vehicles are provided by the Indian Oil Corporation. Leading public sector establishments including the LIC, Cochin Shipyard Ltd., HLL Lifecare and Federal Bank are also associating with the nationwide magical endeavour.

The entourage is carrying the National Flag entrusted to them by the Chief Minister of Kerala, V.S. Achuthanandan on 2n dof October. With the support of the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board, a successful Kerala leg of the mission was held. Thereafter a farewell ceremony organised by the District Administration of Palakkad was inaugurated by the Minister of Electricity, A.K. Balan.

The Mission India feat had its curtain raiser on the terrace of the Mumbai Taj hotel on 24th of September. On the occasion, formal declaration of the mission was made by the Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranarayanan.

The magical mission would conclude on 30th of November after a 60-day tour all over the country.

Memories on Houdini

There won’t be any magician who does not get roused by the memories of Harry Houdini. It is already 84 years after the blessed magician’s demise. Even today, Houdini’s life and messages are evergreen.

Erik Weisz as a small boy in Hungary had no magical background. He was one in the lot and his parents, too were. The life struggles forced the family to sail to Appleton in the United States- may be the first act of escape the great master of escapoloy performed unknowingly at a tender age! In the US, the family just managed to meet the ends together.

Passion for magic grew in the young boy’s heart. As a youngster, Erik’s primary fascination in magic was not for illusions or stage magic. It was a humble dream to become a star in cards. He started taming simple card manipulations. Father of modern magic, Rober Houdin had already become a driving force for him. This became conspicuous when he changed his name into ‘Hari Houdini’. But the youngster failed to live up to the expectation of ‘King of Cards’ the magic name he adopted on stage.

True artistes never succumb to destiny. They re-write the fate in favour of their desire, Harri Houdini. He plunged into thoughts. Finally he found the door to success. He introduced before the world the groundbreaking idea of escape magic tricks.

Soon popularity shot up for him. His name and fame darted reached far distant places. Even in an age of poor communication facilities, Houdini became a name synonym to magic.

Houdini battled strongly against supersti tions. On 31st of October, that marks the death anniversary of the great magician, a resolve to continue the battle would be the best thing we can offer in honour of the great soul.

Palakkad: A farewell drenched in love. That was what exactly the people of Palakkad could give for the Mission India entourage led by gifted magician Gopinath Muthukad, before the latter cross the State border at Walayar today. At 9am in the morning, a fitting function to salute the magical voyage team was organized by the District Tourism Promotion Council. In fact the programme was held to gesture the State’s admiration for the noble mission undertaken by the popular magician and team.

The Minister for Power, A.K. Balan flagged off the voyage at Kottamaidan as the entire crew assembled on the dais in perfect white uniforms – one thing that reflected well peace, the cause for which they march – carrying vibrant tricolours close to their hearts. “May be this is for the first time that magic is proved to be a medium for spreading such a pertinent message against terrorism and violence all over the country”, the Minister said in his speech. Member of Parliament, M.B. Rajesh; M.L.A., K.K. Divakaran; District Collector, K.V. Mohankumar, Superintendant of Police, E. Divakaran; veteran journalists, Joy Sasthampadikkal and P.M. Vasudevan also spoke in praise of Mr. Muthukad and his endeavour.

The entourage comprising of 6 girls and 19 men will now travel straight to Lucknow where the national leg of the magical mission would be inaugurated at the Army station. Thereafter, carrying regional translations of the presentation, the Mission India will be staged all over the country, especially the North East States. The patriotic voyage with free magic shows will then mark formal culmination at the Army station in Chennai on 30^th of November.

The Mission India is supported by the Indian Army, LIC, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Federal Bank and HLL LIfecare Ltd. The Army provides food and accommodation along its stations whereas the IOC provides fuel for the three vehicles of the mission including a bus and two pickup vans.

The voyage began during sunrise from Gandhi Smriti, Kanyakumari on the 2^nd of October when the District Collector, Rajendra Ratnoo flagged off the tour. Later on the day, the Chief Minister of Kerala, V.S. Achuthanandan entrusted the National Flag to Mr. Muthukad for carrying as a source of motivation during the trials and tribulations of the voyage. Mr. Muthukad and team have already accomplished a Kerala leg of their tour under the aegis of the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board. All along the districts the programme received overwhelming response from the media and the public.

The Kerala leg of the mission also had ‘Shade of love’ (Snehathanal) another praiseworthy performance for school children organized under the auspices of the Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department. It was a magic show performed with the help of school children. Green saplings produced on the magic stage was handed over to children by scholarly personalities. Wherever Snehathanal was staged, a tree was thus planted to get a deep rooted love in the tender hearts for trees and environment. The State-level inauguration of the Shade of Love project was inaugurated by the Minister of forest, Binoy Viswam at a function presided over by the Opposition Leader, Oommen Chandy.

The Mission India has already crossed a couple of memorable episodes. One was the curtain raiser staged on the terrace of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai on 24^th of September. Second, the formal declaration of the mission by the Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranarayanan in Mumbai.

But they forget that whatever earned through violence is not going to survive. Violent manifestations can earn only ephemeral achievements. Solutions to be stable and sustainable, should be earned through peaceful means.

Challenges are part of human life. Trials and tribulations of life should not turn our actions incoherent or prompt violence. To forgive is not the quality of the weak, but the trait of the bold, Mahatmaji reminds.

Gandhian texts say, ‘Peace is its own reward’. We know, the freedom we enjoy today is also a reward of peaceful struggles. Mission India is hence the Magic Academy’s humble tribute before the Mahatma, who liberated a Nation to eternal freedom through exceptional commitment to peace and nonviolence.

Thiruvananthapuram: Marking the formal inauguration of the Mission India voyage with free magic shows against terrorism and violence, Chief Minister, V.S. Achuthanandan entrusted the National Flag to the leader of the endeavour, Gopinath Muthukad at a function held here today (02/10/10). Janpeeth laureate poet and Patron of the Magic Academy, O.N.V. Kurup presided over the function. Cultural minister, M.A. Baby spoke on the occasion. The function was organised by the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board (KSYWB). “Gopinath Muthukad is a genius who has introduced magic as an effective tool for communication, one thing that was hitherto not so known to the world”, the CM said.

Mr. Muthukad is leading a team of 25 artistes including 6 girls. The Academy is duly supported by the Indian Army, LIC, Indian Oil Corporation, Cochin Shipyard (CSL), Federal Bank and the HLL Lifecare. Through cantonments, the Army will provide food and accommodation for the voyage team whereas the IOC will fuel the three vehicles.

During Surise on the Gandhi Jayanti day, Mr. Muthukad and team offered a magical tribute at Gandhi Smriti following which the Kanyakumari district collector, Rajendra Ratnoo flagged off the voyage. Earlier, M.L.A., N. Sakthan released the voyage souvenir by handing over a copy to the Vice Chairman of the KSYW, P. Sreeramakrishnan. Mr. Muthukad welcomed dignitaries whereas Honorary director of the Academy, Chandrasenan Mithirmala delivered vote of thanks. Director, Technical and HRD of the CSL, V. Radhakrishnan; General Manager of the IOC, P.M. Nazirudeen; Regional Head of the Federal Bank, V.R. Madhavakumar and Sr. Divisional Manager of the LIC, Saji Paul spoke. Following the inaugural function, Mr. Muthukad staged 45-minute-long Mission India magic show. The CM watched it till the end and wished "all success for the magical feat" before he left.

Before the Kerala leg of the voyage concludes in Kasaragode on 16th, the Mission India magic shows will be demonstrated in district headquarters with the active participation of around 5000 youth clubs affiliated to the KSYWB. After the Kerala part, the entourage will travel by three vehicles to the heart of India.

The 60-day-long voyage will culminate in Chennai on 30th of November with a show organised by the Army.

A curtain raiser of the Mission India was fittingly staged on the terrace of the Taj Hotel in Mumbai on 24th of September with the memorial of 26/11 making a perfect backdrop for the magic stage. Then the Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranarayanan formally declared the magical feat.

The Mission India is going to be Mr. Muthukad’s fourth national endeavour of using magic as a medium for driving in messages. Vismay Swaraj Yatra of national integration messages in 2002, Gandhi Mantra disseminating Gandhian philosophies in 2005 and the Vismay Swaraj Yatra reliving glorious chapters of the freedom movement in 2007 are his glaring previous feats. In Kerala, Mr. Muthukad has performed on pertinent social themes including literacy, health, hygiene, environment and dismantling of superstitions.

Thiruvannathapuram: Final round of rehearsals for the Mission India magic show conceived by magician Gopinath Muthukad to spread messages of peace and harmony to defeat terrorism and violence was staged today (01/10/10) in front of an august gathering comprising of literary luminaries.

Patron of the Magic Academy ONV Kurup, Sugathakumari, Perumbadavam Sreedharan, V. Madhusudanan Nair, Puthussery Ramachandran, Dr. George Onakoor, Dr. Aranmula Hariharaputhran, cine director, Sathyan Anthikkad; Soorya Krishnamoorthy and Prof. V.N. Murali were there to witness the final trial staging of the show. The show began with imparting the insight that the value of our culture was its ready receptiveness to cultures around.

Spectators were wonderstruck to see an ancient hermit meditating in the midair and saint Thoma Sleeha alighting to life from a life size portrait. When a curtain carrying the holy messages raised and lowered, appeared there was a Mughal emperor. Magical scenes also taught that division among people was a phenomenon imported by imperialist ships who invaded our shores long ago. Also brought back are the poignant tales of freedom struggle. The show concludes giving an inspiring knowledge that religious conflicts do not match to the secular composure of a country like ours. Instead, religions should form a vibrant spectrum of adornment to our country like rainbow on the sky.

Outside Kerala, the show will be presented in the regional languages of various States. Mr. Muthukad and team had a photo session with dignitaries. With a little excess emotion, Mr. O.N.V. Kurup blessed Mr. Muthukad to have a victorious voyage. “This is definitely a wonderful experimentation. Gopi will come out victorius” said Ms. Sugathakumari. Finally the litterateurs sat together and offered a handful of personal advices to the magician, before they dispersed.

Tomorrow (02/10/10) a free demonstration of the Mission India magic will be held for public at 11am at the Tagore Theatre. On the occasion, the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board (KSYWB) will convene a function at which, Chief Minister, V.S. Achuthanandan will entrust the National Flag to Mr. Muthukad. The function will be presided over by O.N.V. Kurup. Cultural Minister M.A. Baby will deliver keynote address. KSYWB will offer venues for the Kerala leg of the voyage until it concludes in Kasaragode on 15th. Around 5000 youth clubs affiliated with the KSYWB will participate in the State leg of Mission India.

Kerala University recognition for Magic Academy’s courses

University recognition for a magic teaching course is first time in the world.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala University (KU) has recognised the courses in the art and science of magic offered by the Magic Academy led by ace illusionist Gopinath Muthukad. Kerala University’s Centre for Adult Continuing Education Extension (CACEE) will conduct examinations and issue certificates for the Certificate and Diploma courses of the Academy. A recognition of this sort for courses in the art of magic is for the first time in the world. Today morning in the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Dr. A. Jayakrishnan, a memorandum of understanding in this regards was signed between the Executive Director of the Academy, Gopinath Muthukad and Registrar of the university, K.A. Hashim. Director of the CACEE, Dr. Supriya, Honorary Director of the Academy, R. Raja Moorthy and General Manager of the Academy, K.P. Sivakumar were present.

In the initial stage a 100 hour certificate course and a diploma course having 200 learning hours will be conducted. The Academy will invite application forms and conduct the classes. In turn, the CACEE will conduct examinations. The 3-month-long Certificate course in Magical Art and Science will comprise of the history of magic, science of magic, showmanship, Close-up magic and Conjuring magic. The Diploma course in the art and science of magic, a 6-month-long one will have in its syllabus, illusion magic, too. Those who have passed SSLC or equivalent examination are eligible for an admission to the certificate course. Only those who pass the certificate course or those who have started performing magic on stage can join for the diploma course.

The 14-year-old Academy, popular as the Asia's first one of its kind, was established by Mr. Muthukad as per the foresighted guidances obtained from the late Malayattoor Ramakrishnan, who was a bureaucrat turned novelist. Since then the Academy has been offering a plethora of service to the magicians. This include, free accident insurance cover, educational scholarships for the wards of magic families and free magic gadgets for financially poor magicians. The Academy has pioneered the idea of using magic as an efficient medium for spreading virtuous messages including national integration, Gandhian thoughts and communal harmony. Currently, the Academy is led by Jnanpith laureate poet, O.N.V. Kurup as Patron. To the latest, Mr. Muthukad has embarked on 'Mission India', a 60-day voyage through the heart of India spreading messages of peace and harmony to battle terrorism and violence.

Mission India: ‘Shade of love’ to instil love for trees

Kerala leg of the national endeavour will have a segment for conservation of trees, too.

Thiruvananthapuram: A programme for instilling love for trees and environment among school children, presented as part of his national endeavour ‘Mission India’ by magician Gopinath Muthukad, will be held in one school in each of the districts in the State.

Named, ‘Snehathanal’ (Shade of love), the awareness magic show is brought out by the Magic Academy with the support of the Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department. ‘Shade of love’ heralds the ideal of growing communal harmony for achieving social amity just like planting trees for getting cool shades. There will be a magic item presented with the participation of school children. Children will plant ‘trees of communal harmony’ one in each school where there is a performance. The Forest Department will provide protective nets for growing trees.

Statelevel inauguration of the event will be performed by the Minister of Forest, Binoy Viswam at 9.30am tomorrow (on 30th of September) at SMV Higher Secondary School. Opposition Leader, Oommen Chandy will preside over the function. Minister of Youth Affairs, V. Surendran Pillai will deliver keynote address. A green plant produced on the magic stage will be handed over to children by poetess Sugathakumari.

Mumbai: His Excellency, Shri K. Sankaranaryan arrived exactly at 7.00 p.m. The 500-strong audience arose in respect. The National Anthem filled the beautiful Yogi Sabha Gruh in Dadar with patriotic fervour, and His Excellency officially inaugurated ‘Mission India’ Muthukad’s 60-day magical yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, starting 2nd October.

The Governor had reserved a few special words for his favourite ‘Gopi.’ “A magician who loves his country so much, that he has dedicated his art to spreading the message of anti-terrorism, peace and harmony, can be called a ‘son of the soil’. From the time I knew Gopinath, I have seen in him, a constant change. But this is only as far as his vibrant costumes are concerned. At heart, he is the same old Gopi who simply loves India and cannot see the country ruined by extremists and separatists. I wish him the best on his Mission India.”

After his virtuous blessing, His Excellency expressed a desire to watch the magical performance by Muthukad. He was accompanied by his wife. The other dignitaries present were India’s Bhajan Maestro Shri Anup Jalota; Shri Rishiraj Singh, Joint Commissioner of CBI; Shri P. K. Vijaykumar, Commissioner of Income Tax – Div. II and Captain Nambiar, Chief PRO of Indian Navy.

Magic to be a teaching tool against terrorism and violence.

Mumbai: Curtains raised on 24th of September at Taj Hotel Mumbai, for Gopinath Muthukad’s yet another feat for the Nation. A magic show described as ‘Swearing with Mumbai’ was duly performed on the pristine terrace of Taj hotel, a patriotic monument that stands tall, pronouncing before the world that India, like a phoenix can emerge over the flames of terrorism in no time. On the background of the stage was the monument of the 26/11 martyrs. The stage faced roaring Arabian sea and on its two sides stood the Gateway of India and the old block of the hotel.

Joint Director of the CBI, Rishiraj Singh inaugurated the show at a brief function. Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, P.K. Vijayakumar; Defence PRO, Nambiar; noted media personality, P.K. Ravindranath and beauty queen, Parvathi Omanakuttan were present.

During the show, Mr. Muthukad and team were assisted by children from Lady Vishanji Academy. The event was organised by Shailaja Nair Foundation led by the CEO of FEI Cargo Ltd., Pratap Nair.

The magic show sent poignant messages of oneness and fraternity with which an attempt by separatists to divide mother India was foiled. Exuberant was the flamboyance of tricolour and resounding was the ‘Vandemataram’ slogans.

Earlier Mr. Muthukad paid floral tributes at the 26/11 memorial. In the evening the Governor of Maharashtra, K. Sankaranarayanan will perform formal declaration of the magical endeavour.

Fourth mission

‘Mission India’ is the magician’s fourth national endeavour of using magic for driving in messages of peace, harmony and amity. It is a 60-day voyage with free magic shows, starting from Kanyakumari on 2nd of October and culminating in Chennai on 30th of November.

Leading institutions of the country including Indian Army, LIC of India, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Cochin Shipyard Ltd., Federal Bank and the HLL Lifecare Ltd. have joined with the mission as principal sponsors.

Kerala leg

At 11am on the Gandhi Jayati day, the Chief Minister, V.S. Achuthanandan will formally handover the National Flag to Mr. Muthukad for carrying throughout the mission. The function at the Tagore Theatre here, will be presided over by the patron of the Magic Academy, Prof. O.N.V. Kurup. Cultural Minister, M.A. Baby will deliver keynote address. M.L.A., N. Sakthan will felicitate the function. From Kollam to Kasaragode the mission will be supported by the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board.

Shade of love

All over Kerala, the magic team will perform a customised magic show christened, ‘Sneha Thanal’ (Shade of love) for spreading environmental thoughts among school children. This is a programme to be held with the support of the Forests and Wildlife Department of Kerala, participating school children from one school in each of the 14 districts. State level inauguration of this event will be performed by the Minister of Forest, Binoy Viswam at 9.30am on 30th of September at the SMV Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram. At the function, chaired by the Opposition Leader, Oommen Chandy, Minister of Youth Welfare, V. Surendran Pillai will deliver keynote address. Poet, Sugathakumari will hand over a communal harmony tree to children.

National episode

In the morning on 17th of October, as the Kerala chapter of the magical mission concludes in Kasaragode, the magical entourage will begin their journey into the heart of India. A bus for carrying men and two trucks for carrying materials form the fleet. Led by Mr. Muthukad, the 24-member team including 6 girls will be travelling huge distances by road daring topographical challenges before their mission concludes in Chennai on 30th of November. During their travel, Mission India magic shows with virtuous messages will be performed on the stages offered by the Indian Army as well as civilian NGOs.

At cantonments and camps, the Army will provide food and accommodation for the entourage. Fuel for the three vehicles will be given by the IOC.

Thiruvananthapuram: Magical translations to the Mevelinadu (country of King Mahabali) of equality, justice, happiness and satisfaction at the Onam Magic Fest organised by the Magic Academy today (11/09/10). The magic competitions organised for the first time with theme Maveli, Vamanan and the good old days, were proved entertaining and enigmatic. For example, during the first prize winning show by child prodigy Mohammed Shanu who came in the guise of Vamana was clearly pushing into the earth and vanishing Samson Sunny who was there in the role of Mahabali. Not over the team ‘Five Fingers’ also showed reincarnation of the Mahabali. When these legendary characters visited homes of the present, women and children were found astonishing them by offering them a full-fledged ‘Ona Sadhya’ deftly produced from thin air. Shanu was adeptly aided by his team of junior magicians, Nadhiya, Aleena and Anamika.

The first prize in seniors was fetched by Shahabas Khan and team. Khan’s was a magic play themed on the good old days of Mahabali. The poor and the rich who are equally treated at the palace of the King was depicted through magical visuals. Magician who entered the court of the King in the guise of a snake charmer not only produced a snake out of his basket, but also turned ropes into stiff rods. The magician’s assistant was skilfully suspended on air to the enjoyment of the King.

Malavika from Kollam who depicted Maveli’s transition into a girl won second prize in junior category. For a weeping girl, garlands, pookkalam and a full course of meals were produced out of nothing.

Over sixty magicians from across the State and neighbouring Tamil Nadu took part in the festivities. Participants were offered an Ona Sadhya in traditional style. Master classes in magic by Honorary Director, R. Raja Moorthy and Hyderabad’s renowned magician, Ch. Shyam carried their counterparts to newer horizons of magical wisdom.

Thiruvananthapuram: At the Magic Academy led by Gopinath Muthukad, the vivacity of Onam is still in the air. The Academy is organising a variety of programmes on 11th of September for which around 50 magicians from the State are expected to assemble. Christened, ‘Onam Magic Fest’ the one-day event will have master classes and magic competitions for the participants.

General Secretary of the Purogamana Kala Sahithya Sangham, Prof. V.N. Murali will inaugurate the event at 9.30am. Honorary Director of the Academy, Chandrasenan Mithirmala will preside over. Master class on body loading techniques will be led by Hyderabad’s acclaimed magician, Ch. Shyam. Another class by an honorary director and faculty chief of the Academy, R. Raja Moorthy will lead magician to upper levels of modern close-up magic. In between, served for lunch will be a full-fledged traditional ‘Ona Sadhya’ on green leaves.

Adding spice to the programmes, will be a ‘Maveli Magic Competition’ for seniors and juniors at 1.30pm wherein magicians in the guise of the Asura King, 'Mahabali' will be competing to relive the glorious past through magical demonstrations. The King was synonym to justice, equality and good rule who was sent down beneath the world, by Lord Vishnu who came as a petite Brahmin boy. Not only this magical myth, but also the good time of the Asura King's rule will be relived by magicians on stage. Introduced for the first time, Maveli Magic will allow team presentations by magicians. Already three troupes of the seniors and three junior troupes from different parts of the State have registered for these competitions.

Crystal trophies sponsored by the Style Plus will be distributed to the winners during a valedictory at 5.30pm. A performance by the first and second prize winners will add charm to the closing ceremony. Evening gala shows are open for public.

Country's first ever festival of patriotic magic is slated for January 2011.

Thiruvananthapuram: On this bright Independence Day of the country, the Magic Academy is announcing 'INDIAJaal' the country's first summit of national integration magic to be held on 25, 26 of January 2011 in Thiruvananthapuram. This is going to have all features of a mega magic convention but is devoted to the cause of promoting national integration messages through diverse programmes. In short INDIAJaal is an event that comprises of six types of magic competitions, two lecture classes, dealers malls and some surprise stuffs, but each and every thing oriented towards the cause of promoting national integration, patriotism and social amity.

Innovative competitions

The competitions include Flash India (flash production of a patriotic slogan); Illusion (national integration illusion show with one magician and three of his assistants); Patter Magic Sr. and Jr. (pungent speech using one's mother tongue) and Conjuring Sr. and Jr. (national integration conjuring show). For illusion competitions, magicians of age 15 and above can only take part. In this category a magician can bring three assistants on stage. The award was instituted by the Gandhi Bhavan International Trust and was declared for three persons including the Minister for Forests, Binoy Viswam (third from left) for his contributions in the field of environmental conservation and noted journalist, Nikesh Kumar. Last adieu for magician Jain Pallathettu

Thiruvananthapuram: Magic Academy has mourned the death of magician Jain Pallathettu (44) of Thirunakkara, Kottayam. He breathed his last at a massive heart attack. The deceased is survived by his wife Lisa and daughters, Namitha and Navya. A passionate fan of magical art, he found time for offering amateur magic shows in between his business responsibilities of running 'Pallathettu Group' of commercial firms. He is the founder President of Kottayam Magicians Art Society. "He was a friend and well wisher of magicians. He had special affection towards poor street magicians whom he used to help a lot", recollects P.M. Mithra of his departed friend.

Jain Pallathettu has followed the footsteps of his father the late Zakharia who had close business contacts in North India from were he learned magical art. Zakharia is considered to be the first magician to introduce blindfold motorbike riding in Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram: “If Gazals and Bhajans slowly cast a spell in the minds of audience, an nimble magician like Muthukad swiftly does it”, said acclaimed Bhajans and Gazals singer, Anup Jelota. He said this while inaugurating magician Gopinath Muthukad’s new programme season at Tagore theatre on the 1st of August. The occasion was the anniversary celebrations of Terumo Penpol and the singer was an invited guest of the magician. Mr. Jelota accompanied by the businessman in Mumbai, Prathap Nair arrived in the city with the only purpose of inaugurating and watching Mr. Muthukad’s show.

The singer, along with his Malayalam counterpart, G. Venugopal and Mr. Nair, stepped into the magic stage after the first three items of the magician. With a magic wand received from his magician friend, Mr. Jelot touched a blank fram mounted on a stage and in no time there appeared a multicolour poster of the programme. During his inaugural speech Mr. Jelota said that magic was an art of enchanting beauty and if a charming performer like Mr. Muthukad tried a chance in the Bollywood, he would support. He was also in support of the magician’s idea of creating a composition by weaving together magic and music.

Mr. Muthukad’s new version of entertainment show titled, ‘World of Illusions’ was presented with the support of 3000kg of materials and manpower of 25 supporting artistes. The two-hour-long magic had deft use of latest light and sound techniques and introduction of an array of illusions tried for the first time on the country’s magic stages. Audience burst into laughter when the magician’s masterpiece cine-magic, hitherto presented on the backdrop of an ice cream parlour was staged incorporating two comic characters – a magician named ‘Gopi’ and ‘Muthukad’ an idle. After the magic show, Mr. Jelota also went with the magician to watch the final round of a music reality show held in the city.

Show in Maldives

Around noon next day, when Mr. Muthukad and his troupe boarded flight to Maldives, Mr. Jelota and Mr. Nair boarded a return flight to Mumbai. In Maldives, the magic troupe will be staging six shows as part of the Indo-Maldives Friendship Festival under the aegis of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the High Commission of India in Maldives.

First Malayalam book on magical literature

Thiruvananthapuram: ‘Mayaaksharangal’ a book written by Honorary Director of the Magic Academy, Chandrasenan Mithirmala and considered as the first book in Malayalam to introduce the magical contexts in 66 famous works from Malayalam and other languages, was released here on 24th of July by writer Dr. George Onakkoor. At a function presided over by poet, Neelamperoor Madhusoodanan Nair, General Secretary of the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham, Prof. V.N. Murali received the first copy.

There are engrossing and concise chronicles in the book about the influence of magic in books including the ‘100 years of solitude’ by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; ‘Mantra charadu’ of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, stories of M.T. Vasudevan Nair, poem of P. Kunhiraman Nair and short stories written by magician Gopinath Muthukad. These articles were earlier serialised for six years in the Academy’s monthly journal, ‘Vismayam Magical News’. Mr. Muthukad has written the preface for the book.

The function was felicitated by Mr. Muthukad and Prof. Lalithabai. Lalsalam gave welcome speech and the author of the book, Mr. Mithirmala offered vote of thanks. Published by the city-based Mythri Books, the book is priced at Rs.85. The book will be available at major book shops as well as the Magic Academy's store.

The ‘Mayaaksharangal’ is also the first book published by Mr. Mithirmala who is also Chairman of the district chapter of the Headload Workers’ Welfare Board.

More magical evenings

Thiruvananthapuram: Evenings can be more entertaining now for the city dwellers. The Magic Academy has launched evening courses in the art and science of magic. The course mainly aims at the working class who are engaged during the daytime.

Class timings is from 6pm to 7.30pm. There will be basic and higher modules. Each module would have approximately 15 classes.

Course ofexcellence

For magicians who wish to conceive a 30-40 minutes of show, the Academy offers a ‘Course of Excellence’. The classes will help the participants to streamline their ongoing shows and make it more attractive. The stage, light and sound etc. available with the Wonder World auditorium of the Academy will be permitted for practicing sessions. The course has already been offered at the Magic Academy Research Centre at the KINFRA Film and Video Park, Kazhakuttam.

Residential facility

Both these centres have a capacity to provide accommodation for two candidates each. For a monthly fee of Rs.1500, standard accommodation with complimentary dinner or breakfast will be provided.

Other courses available are: Senior Basic Course through Sundays, Junior Basic Course for children (Alternate weekdays during April-May every year) and Five or seven days of Crash Courses in magic (Impromptu, Close-up or Conjuring magic).

Reality Bites – This time it’s magic!

Like it or not, one thing is certain: The Indian world of Magic has changed over the last three weeks. And clearly, this is only the beginning.

I am speaking of “India Magic Star” currently airing on Star One – a first for magic on Indian reality TV. Surely it is the first of many clones that will follow.

All in all, any exposure to magic on prime-time should be good for the art of legerdemain, unless it results in exposure or is so bad that people abhor it.

I have not watched all episodes (don’t blame me!), but what I saw has not left me feeling good. The magicians on the show – save one (or two) – are rather rusty and leave a lot to be desired. Plus, the initial acts performed were blatant copies of international acts.

If blatantly copying well-known acts was not bad enough, the performers unashamedly claimed these as their own creations! And if you took a magical pudin-hara to digest that lie, they claimed being the first and only ones to have performed these effects in the country!

What’s worse, the judges – erroneously referred as “master magicians” – go ga-ga and wah-wah over anything that is shown, irrespective of how it fared; even when the replay showed how the trick was done!

I remain hopeful that Franz Harare who joined the show this week brings respectability to the show. Our one chance to woo our audiences depends on the difference Franz brings to this bad show.

Much magical Munch Star Singer

With the second season of the very popular music talent show called Munch Star Singer Junior, already underway, there was an element missing in the show. Before pondering more time on what it was other than music, let me tell you it is the Magic. The first and foremost season of the music talent show, was full of music filled with the elemnt of Magic, as it had our own Magic Uncle, Gopinath Muthukad as the Judge for most parts of the show. He used to mesmerize the contestants, judges and the viewers of the show. He also provided valuable thoughts from the magical heart, and envisaged the contestants to become more and more confident and efficient in their journey of life.

Now, the show has energized, with the return of the master magician. He has now come all the way again, to start from where he had left off in the last season. He is still continuing to put in that magic into his presence and it is always a treat to watch when he performs and speaks. The music and the magic. Surely, both of them makes a great and inseparable blend. With the music from the tiny tots, and the magic from Magic Uncle, Munch Star Singer is again becoming like it was in the last season. Now the magic has improved, so as the music.As the competition gets harder, Magic is the perfect thing that you want to cool your hearts up. And this is exactly, what the show provides. So, this is one show that you will never want to miss.

Wow! E-groups!!

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian magician is becoming internet savvy. With the grace of Internet and computers fast becoming facilities inevitable, many native magicians have already become members of e-groups. A couple of e-groups borne in the IT hub of the country, Bangaluru proves to be hot places of interaction between magicians of the country.

The idea of establishing an e-group for the country’s magicians was the brainchild of young and famous mentalism performer, Nakul Shenoy. His Yahoo-group, ‘IndianMagique’ has been active since 2003 December. For the initial month it had just 14 messages going across. Currently around 150 magicians use it as an online podium for placing their views, tips and helpful information for the benefit of the magic community. Heated exchanges also occur between the members when the issue has got both says.

The group receives an average of 50-150 messages a month. “This eGroup has been set up to equip the Indian magicians with a common platform to discuss the art of legerdemain. Being a magician's eGroup, the membership is restricted to performing magicians from India”, says Mr. Shenoy. Those who are genuinely interested in the art of magic can try for a membership in this e-group by contacting nakulshenoy@gmail.com.

Another e-group in the fore is ‘TalkMagic’, conceived by star performer and manufacturer in magic, Uday Jadugar. This is a Google group that began its function since November 2009. Veterans in the field including A.K. Dutt, Cijam Jammu, Solyl Kundu* and Ramaswamy use to frequently post messages. TalkMagic statistics show that Mr. Dutt stands alltime topper posting over 500 messages. Major attraction of TalkMagic is a free exchange of tricks behind many new magic items.

If you are a magician and member of these e-groups, the time you spare online would be worthier.
